Copper Intaglio Etching

Whats Copper Intaglio?

Copper intaglio is a printmaking technique in which designs are etched or engraved into a copper plate. When etched, the plates are ducked into acid tanks to carve away pre-determined lines, thus creating a groove. Ink is applied to the plate, filling these grooves, and then wiped off the surface. When pressed onto paper, the ink in the grooves transfers, creating a detailed print.

The pieces below showcase the instances where I've used this technique…

“Extraction”

This series showcases four separate prints related to one specific theme. The theme for this series was “Teeth/Dental,” and the piece's title is “Extraction.” The prints themselves utilize four different etching techniques: soft ground etching, Hard ground etching, Drypoint etching, and aluminum etching, specifically done through the use of a Cricket engraver. Furthermore, all pieces in some way were etched drypoint strictly using dental tools.

I wanted this series to be special and connect to myself somehow. So, I chose to do a piece related to teeth and dentists. Growing up, I had many dental problems, including, but not limited to, having braces for nearly 8 years. Because of this, I’m not a big fan of the dentist, but I drew on these memories to create a piece that reflects my own emotions and experiences toward the dentist.
