Eat Your Vegetables

It all began with a sketch while killing some time during a show. I was sketching out these veggie fellas that were all shredding it skater style. I drew so many of them I decided I wanted to put them in a Zine just for the heck of it, and this was a better time than any. Skating has been special in my heart since I was young, filming my brother skate, until now, when my brother went off to become a professional skate photographer and videographer. There are even a few veggie skaters based on real skaters, and they clip in skate vids he’s worked on.

The Project itself was made with a RISO machine. RISO is like mixing a copy machine and screen printing; although it is way faster than screen printing, it can only print on paper and needs physical layers to copy. For this project, I started by breaking the images into color layers and printing them one after the other on top of each other to form the final image.

A few side details of this piece that are typically not seen are the lettuce leaf skater skating on a peeler and inside a cucumber, which I think is pretty cool. Lastly, I’m notoriously dyslexic, and the “keep shredding” is completely misspelled, which was a mistake, but maybe it makes this piece more me.

Since I was already moving out of Humboldt County back to LA, I decided to do a project just for fun for those who have always appreciated my art, my friends, and my community. So, I placed most of the Zines in bags, put them around the community for people to find, and gave them to my friends as farewell presents. It was really fun.

InkPeople Humboldt

I would not have been able to do this project without using the Inkpeople Humboldt open studio hours for RISO printing and receiving exceptional help from Lavra and @badcatpomegrate for helping me with printing this project.
